Show business is in Ward Smith’s blood. He’s an actor and a standup comedian, and he operates the Off-Central, St. Petersburg’s 42-seat black box theater. The Off-Central’s tiny space epitomizes the word intimate. As Smith relates in today’s Arts Alive! podcast, the give-and-take between audience and performer is immediate, and skin-deep. This playhouse is not where you’re likely to see Les Miserables staged – or anything else with a cast of thousands. There are no nosebleed seats. During the conversation, Smith talks about the benefits of that artist-to-audience ratio, and about the risks he takes in programming titles he believes are top-drawer, but don’t always have the “name recognition” that brings patrons to the theater. Still, the Off-Central, in its third year, is benefitting from word-of-mouth, amongst the players and the people who watch them play. Smith takes us through the upcoming fall season, which includes the participation of several well-known professional actors who work almost exclusively on Tampa stages. Female nude statues symbolizing fertility date back more than 29,000 years. Larger-than-life Greek and Roman statues idealize the athletic qualities of the male figure in the buff. The world’s most famous galleries are filled with countless paintings of both women and men without a stitch of clothing on. In the 1920s in Paris, the Dadaists — the precursors to the Surrealists — regularly staged nude performances along with provocative art installations. Fifty years ago at the Academy Awards a streaker named Robert Opel ran across the stage, buck naked and flashed a peace sign. This month The Oscars paid an ironic tribute to that iconic moment as John Cena gave out the award for Best Costume — in his birthday suit, with the winner’s envelope strategically placed. Today is National Pet Day. Why not adopt a fur-baby from the local shelters? It's good for them and good for your health.  A rescue dog can heal your soul, keep you moving and help you make new friends at local dog parks, such as A.L. Anderson Park, Boca Ciega Millenium Park, John Chesnut Sr. Park, Eagle Lake Park, Sand Key Park, Helen Howarth Dog Park, Madeira Beach Dog Park, Gulfport Dog Park, Kenwood Dog Park, Crescent Lake Dog Park, Indian Rocks Beach Dog Park, Walsingham Park and others. Fort De Soto has the only county dog park where dogs are allowed on the beach in a designated area. There are also two fenced-in areas with water stations near the beach for large and small dogs. The beach entrance is at the far southwest corner of dog park. Walking (and aerobic exercise) can boost new brain cell growth and creativity. When you walk, you increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the brain that can enhance creativity. The curtain comes up on American Stage’s production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast tonight at Demens Landing, and Producing Artistic Director Helen R. Murray is thrilled. The every-April “park musical,” in the middle of the theater’s season, is always a crowd magnet. And it’s the first “park show” Murray, who joined American Stage in October 2022, chose herself (the previous season was programmed by her predecessor, and she inherited it when he left). So Beauty and the Beast is a big one. “I also wanted to make it a family-friendly affair,” Murray explains on this edition of our Arts Alive! podcast. “And I don’t know that I’ll do that every year, but I really did want to bring something to ‘park’ that could celebrate our community in a really big, arms-open kind of way. So I thought Beauty and the Beast would be the perfect one. “And also, Belle is just one of those princesses I really can get behind. She’s really smart. She is the savior of that story – she’s not rescued, she does the rescuing all the way throughout.” Not that American Stage needed rescuing, but Murray’s arrival – from the Aurora Fox Arts Center in Denver – certainly wafted some much-needed fresh creative air in St. Pete’s direction. Her programming thus far this season, from Acts of Faith to Indecent to The Chinese Lady, has been bold and provocative. Then there’s Beauty and the Beast. Murray likes to say mixing “entertainment and challenge” is an effective way to keep the audience coming back. “I like magic onstage. We go to see moments of wonder. Conceived during the pandemic, this work explores the sensation of being lost within a spectrum, and how the emotions that arise resonate within the body, ultimately manifesting in movement. Also featured is Sarah Walston Philips’ Atlas Modern Ballet with their premiere of Frozen Angels. Inspired by an exhibit of Greek sculptures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, this dance work explores how myth and lore reveal truths about our human nature. In their first co-creation, Heidi Brewer and Sharon McCaman explore the passage of time through light play in their neighborhood. Their cinematic exploration pays homage to historical gems of the Old Northeast, seamlessly merging dance film with live performance. The work prompts audiences to reflect on markers of time, the pull and dependency of natural rhythms, and the tangible presence of the here and now. Davis is a graduate of Spelman College and holds a Master of Fine Arts from The George Washington University. Her community ties led her to serving as Community Liaison for Fairgrounds and Program Director and Curator for the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum. Davis continued her relationship with the museum as the founder, producer, and host of Curious Collector | Conversation Café, a monthly art discussion with national appeal. Curious Collector discussions center around the presence of African Americans in the arts. On this week’s edition of Arts Alive! we welcome David Manson, founder and director of the St. Petersburg Jazz Festival, which celebrates its 15th year April 1-6. Manson, who’s taught music at St. Pete College for 32 years (he now wears the title Distinguished Faculty), explains that the festival – five concerts in various locations – was designed not to spotlight “name” artists, but to direct audience’s attention to great music and excellent musicians they may not be familiar with. Most of them are residents of the bay area, or live, work and play close by. Giving local musicians a proper showcase is a hallmark of the St. Petersburg Jazz Festival. Bassist/composer Mauricio J. Rodriguez and his MJR Latin Project play Wednesday, April 3 at the Palladium Theater Side Door. April 4 brings pianist and composer Markus Gottschlich and his Trio to the Music Center at St. Petersburg College, 6605 5th Ave. North. Gottschlich, who happens to be the executive director of the Warehouse Arts District Association, talked about his relationship with music on the previous edition of the Arts Alive! podcast (listen here). The Brazilian-music quartet O Som Do Jazz, featuring Manson on trombone and his wife, Rio’s Andrea Moraes Manson, on vocals, is onstage outdoors at the Warehouse Arts District’s ArtsXchange April 5; this one’s a free concert. Rafael Pereira and Jose Valentino Ruiz will join the band, which has just issued its 4th album of original music. April 6 at the Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Museum, it’s Sarasota-based Hot Club SRQ, playing Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli-style gypsy jazz. 2024 St. Petersburg Jazz Festival showcases five great evenings of jazz in four venues April 1-6, plus two free jazz workshops around Pinellas County. In RadioStPete INSIDER’s newest series, Live Life Better, news director interviewed Corinne Rungo, founder of DanceFit and a performer/dancer who believes that dance and music enhance mind/body/spirit at every age. From ballroom to boogie, dancing is all the rage for seniors to millennials both for the fun and fitness benefits.  At Rungo Dance Depot in downtown Clearwater, you’ll find Corinne Rungo teaching classes, hosting socials, performing with some students at events and fundraisers and just having the time of their life. Looking confident and having fun, the students from 15 to 85 rumba and waltz, foxtrot and hustle with Rungo as their cheerleader and patient instructor.  Rungo has been dancing and teaching dance for 25 years and opened the Rungo Dance Depot almost nine months ago after teaching classes all over Pinellas County. She touts the benefits of dance for all ages but believes it’s the magic elixir for aging well. One of her students, 91, came to her because his grief counselor suggested that dance would be great therapy. Says Rungo about the benefits of dancing for seniors: “It’s great exercise for the muscles and heart, strengthens the core, reduces risk of falls and exercises the brain. Seniors who dance regularly must memorize movements and routines and react in the moment, especially when dancing with partners. It integrates all three modalities-mind/body/spirit, and you use all your senses – eyes, ears, touch…it’s rejuvenating, being mindful in the present. Dance stimulates, and the added social interaction keeps active seniors young at heart.”  Rungo agrees that dance and music heal and soothes the soul, and for seniors, may just be the right fun, fit activity for just about everybody. It’s growing popularity she says, may be boosted by TV hit Dancing With The Stars where unlikely stars such as Warren Sapp bewitched new audiences. “It showcases the power of touch -- power of dancing with someone and an intimacy in the world has diminished relationships (romantic, family and friends) hijacked by our devices. Radio St. Pete INSIDER news director Nanette Wiser interviewed WADA Board of Director and artist Nancy Cohen whose studio in the Warehouse Arts District (WADA) was one of the first. is a still life painter, classically trained in the chiaroscuro style of the old masters but with a fresh, more contemporary style.   Nancy paints from life - a single source of north light shines on the scene before her and transforms mundane objects into luminous shimmering vessels.   She wants her work to show you the beauty and mystery she sees.   The result is a drama of bright light and dark shadows that bring her paintings to life. Nancy is from New York City and now lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.  She studied at the Art Students League of New York with Gregg Kreutz and has taken workshops with many of the masters of modern realism - C.W. Mundy, Duane Keiser, Christopher Gallego, John Morra, David Leffel, and Dennis Perrin. Markus Gottschlich, executive director of the Warehouse Arts District Association, guests today on the Arts Alive! podcast. A native of Austria, Gottschlich was brought in to run the nonprofit WADA two years ago. The organization has many missions, including the support and public endorsement of local art and artists. The Arts Xchange, the centerpiece of the district, is home base for WADA, as well as numerous artist studios and galleries, several retail businesses, a working kitchen, a new outdoor stage and, as of 2023, the home of St. Pete’s long-lived Academy of Ballet Arts. Our discussion spans the past, the present and the future of the WADA campus, which has become, in recent years, a major hub for all kinds of community activity, most arts-related. We also talk about Gottschlich’s other laser-focused mission, that of a jazz pianist and composer. He and his trio will perform April 4 as part of the 2024 St. Petersburg Jazz Festival. The two careers are not as opposite as they might appear. “When you’re a musician, and you’re out there playing and teaching – the question arises, is that all there is?” he explains during the interview. “And you want to do something that affects more people than just yourself. “So, I got into arts education. Award-winning jazz vocalist Alexis Cole may be the most talented singer to ever hold a top-secret military clearance. A dozen albums into her critically acclaimed career, she may also be the best-kept secret in jazz, a status that’s certain to change as more people are discovering her for themselves.  The year 2009 was a big one for Alexis: She released her first albums on both Motéma Music and Venus Records… and went to Basic Training to prepare for her new job as a jazz singer for the US Army.  During her seven years in the Army’s Big Band, Cole had the opportunity to grow as a musician and a person, sharing the stage with ensembles as diverse as the New York Philharmonic and Kool and the Gang. Alexis continued recording throughout her tour of duty, releasing a string of well-received albums, including four titles for Venus, two for Motema, and two on Chesky Records. She proved her versatility on everything from jazz standards to Paul Simon’s lesser known compositions, to Disney love songs to a project on which she teamed up with a fellow serviceman 50 years her senior, the legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli.  Though Alexis transformed into an insightful interpreter of jazz during her Army years, understandably, her personal advancements and achievements had to take a back seat to her military responsibilities.  Alexis has blossomed since leaving the service in 2016, trading her uniforms and fatigues for sleek cocktail dresses and chic hats, and focusing fully on her art. The singer’s career has taken on exciting new momentum, with recent accomplishments including gigs at celebrated venues like The Carlyle, Carnegie Hall, Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Blue Note; and performances as a soloist with prominent orchestras such as the Boston Pops and the Detroit Symphony. Alexis also recently contributed a guest turn on pianist Harold Mabern’s star-studded album Afro Blue, alongside the likes of fellow guests Norah Jones, Gregory Porter, and Jane Monheit.  On the education front, in 2020 Alexis Cole founded the website JazzVoice.com, an online educational community featuring singing classes, professional development workshops and private lessons with some of the top names in vocal jazz. “Turtle Joe” Widlansky came to Sea Turtle Trackers from Clearwater Marine Aquarium where he was a Sea Turtle Biologist (2005-2013) and a volunteer in Sea Turtle department (2002-2004). While at CMA, Joe was responsible for sea turtle nest patrols in south Pinellas and worked with sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release. The St. Petersburg Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty invites you on Thursday, March 14 to Happy Hour with the Historian  and the story of Sarah Williams Armistead. The wife of city founder Gen. John C. Williams, Sarah is credited with greasing the wheels of the deal between Williams and the Orange Belt Railway and would go on to co-sign the agreement to bring the railroad which would eventually lead to the creation of St. Petersburg. After John’s death in 1892, the litigation surrounding his large estate, Sarah was left with a large portion of land. She later married Capt. James Armistead, a wealthy former St. Pete Mayor, she managed both his and the Williams properties, platted subdivisions, and gifted land for public use.  When she died in 1917, her estate was valued at $165,000, or nearly $ 3 million today. #spmoh #tampabay #radio #radiostpete

For 24 of Jobsite Theater’s 25 years of existence, Katrina Stevenson has been a key member of the core creative team. As an actor, she’s appeared in dozens of productions over the seasons, from contemporary dramas and comedies to Shakespearean classics to Jobsite’s traditional, seasonal horror yarns. Paul’s debut story collection, Cigar City: Tales From A 1980s Creative Ghetto, won the gold medal for fiction in the 2019 Florida Book Awards and he will be celebrating its 5th anniversary with talks around town. His debut novel, Florida Hustle, earned a starred review from Kirkus and was named among the “100 Best Indie Books of 2022” by Kirkus. A native of Tampa, Paul Wilborn collected multiple awards from the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors during a journalism career that included stints at the Tampa Tribune, The St. Petersburg Times and the Associated Press in Los Angeles. He won the Green Eyeshade Award from the Atlanta Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the South’s top writing prize and won the Paul Hansel Award, Florida’s top journalism prize. As executive editor of Paradise News, her Live Life Better column featured the talented artists’ art monthly as “Words of Joy.”  Trow is a life-long artist and illustrator and much of her work has been inspired by where she lived. Says Trow: “Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, I was mesmerized by the goddesses in the Greek myths we read in early grade school. My career in design and illustration started in Atlanta, where I embraced the power of symbols and their ability to make emotional connections…the basis of my art.  Living in the great Pacific Northwest was a spiritual experience. If you love books, raising awareness of the banned books issue, quirky bibliophile events and cats (she has three), you’ll enjoy this interview with Tiffany Razzano and Nanette Wiser, RadioStPete INSIDER’s news director. Born and raised in New York, Tiffany Razzano is a writer in St. Petersburg, Florida. She’s an editor for Patch, covering Sarasota, Bradenton and Miami. Prior to this, she worked as an editor for Tampa Bay Newspapers.  She also writes for La Gaceta and Watermark. Tiffany is also the founder and president of Wordier Than Thou, a literary arts business that creates fun and engaging events for Florida writers and readers. In a recent article in Green Bench Monthly we learned that Tiffany’s “Her first event was held at the former L Train, a black-box theater on Central Avenue. Soon afterward, the Blah, Blah, Blah Literary Reading and Open Mic moved to Studio@620, where it continues. As successful as the open mic night was, Razzano wanted to reach people who may never have stepped inside a bookstore. To that end, she led Wordier to host quirky literary-themed events at local bars. She challenged local writers to roast dead authors and imagine a world with Donald Trump as President (pre-2016 election), and invited all of Tampa Bay to hear the resulting works. In addition to the fun stuff, Razzano steers Wordier to provide writers with more tools for success.  Wordier hosts the Tampa Bay Publishing Conference every spring in St. Petersburg.  Her latest extension of Wordier Than Thou is a queer feminist pop- up bookstore that sells new and used fiction and non-fiction books by LGBTQ+, women and writers of color as well as banned books. It’s called This Bookstore Kills Fascists, a not-so subtle protest of book censorship in Florida schools. The bookstore’s name is a twist on the slogan “This machine kills fascists” that folk singer Woody Guthrie painted on his guitar during World War II in protest of Hitler and his Nazi regime.  Razzano says the bookstore name is “tongue in cheek” while still trying to make a point against banning books. Our guest on today’s Arts Alive! podcast is actor Alan Mohney Jr., who plays 32 different characters – without leaving the stage – in Becky Mode’s Fully Committed, which opened Thursday night at the Off-Central in St. Petersburg. Fully Committed takes place in a shabby, fluorescent-lit office in the basement of a trendy – and very, very expensive – Manhattan restaurant. Sam (Mohney) is a chronically-unemployed actor who’s paying the bills by taking phone reservations. And abuse. Everybody, including the very rich, the very famous and the extremely obnoxious – wants a table NOW, TONIGHT or some other day the place is inevitably all booked up (a.k.a. fully committed). That sort of thing doesn’t stop them from browbeating poor Sam. Mohney does all the voices, and the body language, for everyone Sam has to frenetically deal with. That includes the restaurant’s egomaniacal chef and other upper-deck employees. Radio St. Pete Correspondent Jordan Kalajian interviews Sarah Wertheimer, the executive director of Embracing Our Differences. From 2-31 the show will be displayed at Poynter Park, located at 3rd St. S and 9th Ave. S. For the first time in 21 years, Embracing Our Differences (EOD) will be displaying its international outdoor art exhibit in St. Petersburg as part of its 2024 exhibition season. Sarah Wertheimer, the executive director of EOD, explains that, in 2003, the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg partnered with the Museum on the Seam in Jerusalem, Israel, to present “Coexistence,” an exhibit of 35 billboard-sized works of art and accompanying words of inspiration that promoted the concept of “coexistence.” In 2004, Sarasota arts advocates Dottie and Bob Garner, Helen and Roy McBean, and Graci and Dennis McGillicuddy co-chaired the first “Coexistence” exhibit in Sarasota. “The rest is history,” says Wertheimer, explaining that Embracing Our Differences was formed as its own nonprofit organization in 2004 through the efforts of Dennis McGillicuddy, Carroll Buchanan and Michael Shelton. “We’re thrilled to come full circle,” says Wertheimer. “Exhibiting in St. Pete has been on our wish list for the last few years and to see it come to fruition is a dream come true. We are grateful to the City of St. Petersburg, the Warehouse Arts District Association, the Florida Holocaust Museum, and many dedicated individuals who have helped us make this happen.” Since 2004, Embracing Our Differences has used the power of art and prose to promote diversity. One way it achieves this is through its annual, juried international outdoor art exhibition comprising 50 billboard-sized works of art, each accompanied by an inspirational quotation. Caryn Nesmith is director of Community Relations at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus. In this role, she serves as a central access point for campus and the community to enhance USF’s ability to serve the St. Petersburg community and promote productive relationships among the university, City, businesses and community members. Prior to this role, she was special assistant for strategic initiatives to the regional chancellor. In that capacity, she oversaw development and execution of new projects and programs on campus and in the community that advance the university’s mission and the regional chancellor’s priorities. Before joining USF, Caryn spent 13 years as a consultant creating and executing communications strategies for international policy on behalf of U.S. and foreign government clients, including overseas assignments as a media advisor and senior strategist in Iraq, Colombia, and the Philippines. Carrie Jadus is one of those left brain-right brain people who seem to be firing on all cranial cylinders. She is a painter whose dreamlike oils are both starkly reality-based and deeply impressionistic, yet she’s also able to apply a practical skill set – she’s got a B.S. in electrical engineering – to making her artwork as not only a business, but a successful business. One of St. Petersburg’s finest fine artists, Jadus is today’s guest on the Arts Alive! podcast. She has been making a living from her art for 18 years now. She recalls early days when she doubted her abilities (and patience) as an artist but could no longer stand to work a 9-to-5 cubicle job even though it paid the bills. She recalls when she and her husband, fellow artist Mark Aeling, invested in what would become the Warehouse Arts District, opening a door for other creatives who desired and needed a place to work, a place that wouldn’t sap their finances dry with rent payments, or surround them with less enthusiastic or like-minded people. Pianist, accordionist and composer Ben Rosenblum has traversed a truly unique musical path, one that has seen him perform alongside world-class musicians across more than twenty music genres and fifteen countries, lead bands at prestigious venues across the world, all while maintaining a signature, melodic musical voice. Rosenblum’s journey has taken him on tours with Grammy-winning pop artist Rickie Lee Jones and Juno-winning contemporary Indian singer Kiran Ahluwalia. He’s played Brazilian choro with Ephrat Asherie Dance and Brazilian forró with The Late Night Show’s Nêgah Santos and famed forró band Forró in the Dark. His roots in jazz have led to an over ten-year relationship with Grammy-winning bassist Curtis Lundy, performing at festivals alongside jazz luminaries Bobby Watson, Sean Jones and Warren Wolf. He has appeared with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on accordion, and as a guest soloist on piano at Carnegie Hall’s Stern-Perelman Auditorium with Maestro Reona Ito’s New York Harmonic Band. Throughout it all, Rosenblum has always maintained the same priority - to tell a compelling story with his music, reaching the hearts of his audience and connecting on an emotional, intellectual and spiritual level. St. Petersburg has a tightly knit jazz community, where musicians often come together in small or larger groups, or play in duos or trios, or simply show up, instrument in hand, and play wherever they’re requested. Inevitably, everyone enjoys themselves tremendously. Many of the world-class jazz players from this side of the bay, or from Tampa, are (or were) associated with the exemplary music programs at the University of South Florida, St. Pete College and the University of Tampa. Some are graduates, some teach, some are both. Today’s guest on the Arts Alive! podcast, vocalist Bryan J. Hughes, is a familiar figure at jazz clubs, and on the concert stage, in both cities. The St. Petersburg Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty Gwendolyn Reese and The African American Heritage Trail of St. Petersburg. The AAHASP was created with a mission to preserve the rich history and genealogical heritage of African Americans in St. Petersburg. Reese will discuss how the AAHASP came together through research, restoration, preservation, commemoration, and education. The walking trail and its historic markers focus on the cultural heritage of the neighborhoods, community leaders, and landmark businesses, and expands awareness and knowledge of Black St. Petersburg, tracing its evolution and progression from the presence of the first African American in 1868 through desegregation and into the Civil Rights Movement (1968).  The 2015 recipient of the MLK Leadership Award, Reese is President of the African American Heritage Association of St. Petersburg. Gwen chaired the group of volunteers who, in a partnership with the city government, developed the African American Heritage Trail along 22nd Street and 9th Avenue in South St. Petersburg, which opened in August 2014. Gwen has been an activist and change agent in this community for more than 40 years. Margaret Murray, the newly appointed CEO of Creative Pinellas, has a very clear picture of the importance of both visual and performing arts in our community. Art, she says, “plays a role in mental health, it plays a role in economic development, it plays a role in enticing tourists to stay and extend their visits here. “The arts are at the middle of the Venn diagram for a lot of things that are great about Pinellas County.” Today’s guest on our Arts Alive! podcast, Murray discusses the road that led her to the top seat at the table – from working (in New York and Amsterdam) for the legendary indie record label Knitting Factory, to a master's in arts administration from Savannah College of Arts & Design to an eight-year tenure at the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg, where she was Director of Public Programs and Community Engagement. “I’ve always worked in the arts,” she tells us. “I think I’ve had one non-arts related job in my entire career – and that was working for an animal rights organization. “It’s always been that background scene that has interested me the most. The five-story, 137,000 square-foot museum is the only facility of its kind dedicated to the American Arts & Crafts Movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period in which American craftsmen and artists rejected the ideals of mass production and created utilitarian objects – furniture, fixtures and more – by hand, with great attention to detail and style. MAACM, as it’s known, was a labor of love by Pinellas County philanthropist Rudy Ciccarello, through his Two Red Roses Foundation. Ciccarello is a preeminent collector of – and expert on – works from the period.  Morgan discusses the movement, the museum and Ciccarello’s dedication to craftsmanship – the building itself, designed by architect Alberto Alonso, is a work of art. Unveiling the Legacy: "Little Satchmo" Sheds Light on Louis Armstrong's Secret Daughter Sharon Preston-Folta By Jordan Kalajian, Radio St. Pete Insider Correspondent (1/29/2024) Jazz legend Louis Armstrong’s music influenced jazz artists for generations to come. But there is another unspoken tune beyond the brass melodies and iconic performances. This lesser-known life story remained behind curtains never to be seen by the public…until 2012.   Sharon Preston-Folta is Armstrong’s illegitimate daughter. After years of contemplation and discussion with her mother, she finally shared her truth with the world when she a book “Little Satchmo,” later adapted into a documentary directed by John Alexander. The riveting film about Louis Armstrong’s secret child has won several awards including the 2023 Southeast EMMY Award, 2022 Japan Indies Film Festival and other festival accolades.  On January 30th Studio@620 in St. Petersburg is hosting a screening of “Little Satchmo.” Tickets start at 5$ and can be purchased here.  The team was most excited about their feature on PBS with “Reel South” in season 7. “It was a dream come true,” said Preston-Folta.  During the film Preston-Folta discusses how behind the scenes Armstrong was a loving father, but it was a different time. Broadcasting the truth then would have jeopardized his career, so the family decided it was best to keep this part of his life a secret. Radio St. Pete Insider got a sneak peek about what to expect after the event. Preston-Folta and a special guest Dr. LaDonna Butler will host a Q&A at the end while they talk about universal themes and topics in the film such as father-daughter relationships, family secrets and feeling invisible. These topics are very relatable and have drawn many to this film.  In the future the Little Satchmo team hopes to reach more with this story. Sharon says “a feature length film is not out of the picture.” The team also hopes to do more educational screenings at universities to create engaging discussions about these topics. Preston-Folta hopes the audience takes away from the film is that “your voice matters.” Sharon’s experience is not unique and many struggle with finding their voice in the world. No matter the circumstances if you believe in yourself and “stand firm in your beliefs… you can make it happen,” says Preston-Folta.  With a story like this Sharon has the ability to reach many and touch their hearts with her story. “If music be the food of love, play on.” The opening line of Twelfth Night, spoken by the lovesick Duke Orsino of Illyria, is one of the most famous of Shakespeare’s many contributions to contemporary language. Actor Giles Davies, who’s playing Orsino in the current Jobsite Theater production of Twelfth Night, often speaks the Bard’s most iconic lines in Tampa-based Jobsite productions. Think of it: He’s played the title characters in Hamlet and MacBeth, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Iago in Othello and Caliban in The Tempest. The company includes a Shakespeare play in every season, and even if Davies isn’t part of the cast, he’s a text and dialogue coach, or assistant director (see Henry V, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It). That’s because the Hong Kong-born, midwestern US-raised and trained thespian worked for many years with the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. He’s taught Shakespeare. He’s done pretty much all the plays. He knows his stuff. FISHING & KIDS – Connecting with nature, one bite at a time By Jordan Kalajian, Radio St. Pete Insider  Fishing is not just a hobby, it’s an opportunity for children and adults to cultivate a love for nature while promoting patience.  So, put down your cell phone, grab a fishing rod, bait your hook and enjoy the ride and get your Mother Nature fix. Radio St. Pete Insider got an inside peek at how fishing benefits children of all ages at January’s St. Petersburg’s Boat Show in downtown St. Pete. Kids learn patience to wait for the right bite they develop crucial skills of self-control which spread far beyond the shoreline. Once they have the right bite they learn composure.  Reeling a fish in can be a rewarding and exciting experience which can create memories that will last a lifetime. “Fishing is not about the catch, it's about the time and the memories,” said Don Dingman during the Hook the Future clinic at the St. Petersburg Boat Show. At the clinic, kids learned about fishing in a safe and fun environment as Dingman talked about fishing gear and how to use it. He gave a presentation on how to reel a fish, from when to reel in and when to let the fish run. Other Hook the Future tips for successful fishing? ·         Identify what kind of fish you want to catch.  ·         Once you target a species it's much easier to figure out the tackle, water depth and location.  ·         Choose your lures. Always bring one light and one dark for versatility and if one doesn’t work, try the other. ·         The movement or action of the lure is going to make the fish bite, so it does not matter whether you use live bait or artificial as long as you are out there trying.  Dingman advocates responsible fishing practices for all ages to avoid damage to the ecosystem. Want to learn more?  Tampa Bay Watch is a nonprofit organization teaching people how to protect and maintain the environment through education programs and restoration projects. ·         Practice good conservation techniques and proper catch-and-release practices to help maintain fish populations and ensure the balance of aquatic habitats.  ·         Proper disposal of fishing gear can help to limit the amount of pollution and prevent harm to marine life. Today’s Arts Alive! podcast is a conversation with Alsace Walantine and Candice Anderson, owners of Tombolo Books in St. Petersburg. The independent book store on 1st Avenue S. opened in December 2019, just three months before Covid-19 forced businesses far and wide to temporarily shut down. Haslam’s, the city’s iconic book center, closed its doors at the onset of the Covid pandemic – and, to date, has not re-opened. And so the torch was passed. Tombolo filled the pandemic gap with home deliveries by car, and by bicycle; patrons could also pull up to the curb in front of the store and have their phone or online orders brought right to the vehicle. The interview covers the early years in Asheville, N.C., where Walentine worked for the city’s top indie bookseller, a place where “the personal touch” – interactions with regular customers and recommending titles, as well as getting involved in community events and organizations – led to longevity and success. And a reputation as a curated center for literature as well as a cultural hub. Four Decades: PCCA Faculty + Alumni Exhibition Opens at Morean Arts Center ST. PETERSBURG, Fla - The Morean Arts Center partners with Gibbs High School to debut Four Decades: PCCA Faculty + Alumni Exhibition on January 13, from 5-8 p.m.  This exhibition celebrates the major contribution the Visual Arts program at Pinellas County Center for the Arts (PCCA) has made to the art world, and specifically, to our community. In 2024, the Morean will host exhibitions featuring PCCA alumni, faculty and current students.  These parts will work together to highlight the past, present and future of the program. Back in August of 1984, the Pinellas County school district opened the PCCA at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg. A magnet program for artistically talented students, PCCA has fostered the talents of countless students who have gone on to do big things in the areas of dance, music, theater and the visual arts. Since its inception in 1984, nearly 20 extraordinary artists have served as faculty members in PCCA’s Visual Arts Department. In addition to a full teaching schedule, these individuals participated in student exhibitions on weekends and evenings, and also created work of their own to exhibit in local and national galleries and museums. Each of these artists brought a unique aesthetic and specific skill set to the program. Much of the success of PCCA alumni can be attributed to these instructors and their commitment to the students. Participating faculty: Steve Beverage, David Bewley, Lauren Blackburn, Bede Clarke, Joyce Ely-Walker, Myron Hansen, Melissa Jo, Alan Johnson, Ted LoCascio, Marty Loftus, Brian McAllister, Stephanie McKee Zielinski, Laurance Miller, Yoko Nogami, Roxanne Pizzuto, Amber Quimby, and Dara Vance. From the class of 1988 to the class of 2024, PCCA boasts numerous successful alumni who have gone on to do major things in the various art disciplines. What a great talk on Cypress Gardens. Brought back wonderful memories. My Mom Was Dick Pope Jr.'s secretary. I was a Southern Bell and water skier in the 60's. Most of us called Dick Pope, Papa Pope. He was a master promotor. I also trained for the Esther Williams spectacular with Fernando Lames. Pope's built the olympic pool with the windows for the his spectacular. I spent the summer after 5th grade learning water ballet. I did not make the cut as I was too short to be in the film. Some of my ski training was with Afredo Mendoza. He also ice skated with Holiday on Ice. You might not recognize Amy Cianci’s name, but her fingerprints are all over St. Pete and Pinellas County. If you’ve read a locally-written book, seen a locally-produced play or attended any public event in the Lealman community, she was most likely one of the engines that propelled it. Today’s guest on the Arts Alive! podcast – the final edition for 2023 – Cianci is Engagement Director for St. Petersburg Press, and Engagement Director (and Project Manager) for the St. Petersburg Group, which owns both St. Petersburg Press and the St. Pete Catalyst. She is also part of the St. Petersburg Foundation, SPG’s nonprofit philanthropic arm. SPG also manages the Lealman Exchange, off 54th Avenue N., which is taking the unincorporated area into exciting new directions through new and improved community engagement. Cianci has an Masters’ in Business Administration, and an extensive background in costume design, having worked for years with American Stage, Ruth Eckerd Hall, freeFall Theatre and the Asolo theater company in Sarasota. Along with her many talents, she’s a people person – she has read, green-lit, edited and overseen production on every one of St. Petersburg Press’s 26 published books. The world of publishing, she explains, has changed dramatically over the last decade. “We wanted those people who didn’t have the option of getting that big advance check from Random House, being picked up by one of the big three … we wanted them to have that full publishing experience,” she explains. In this interview, Cianci talks about working with authors and leading them through the process, reviews her history with clothing and costume design, and discusses the past, present and future of the Lealman community.
